Jacqueline Kinsey Artist Statement
Having been commissioned to paint the unseen; I have been on a journey, as an Artist, to discover what that means. As a result I have begun to push the limits; a collaboration between the spirit and the imagination.
The start of this journey was as unique as I am.
I first discovered my love of the wilderness as a child; mesmerized by its splendor. I mean, who isn’t, really? But this fascination has never faded in me. This is due in part to my unique childhood environment; growing up amongst a forest of Ponderosa Pine trees between the shores of a spring fed lake and the rivers that sprung from the deep Okanagan cliffs and canyons. I spent hours alone in this wilderness as a child and learned to appreciate and have respect for the wildlife I discovered. My Grandfather had a profound influence on how I viewed my world. He taught me to respect both the bear and the rattlesnake, because they had every right to be here too! He also planted the seed of faith in me, which, although has gone through many droughts…it is now stronger than ever.
I started drawing when I was 7 years old. I would trace the shapes of horses from my Uncle and Aunt’s Quarter Horse Journals; again and again. I was determined to be able to draw a horse, free hand. I began to succeed and teachers at school took note at my unique abilities which encouraged my direction.
Once graduated from High School, I moved to Vancouver, BC, where I enrolled and completed a Diploma of Fine Arts at Langara College. I was able to attend their Art History Field School in Europe for 4 months. I studied and toured some of the world’s best Museums and Art Galleries known to mankind. This again gave to me a unique experience that enabled me to develop a rich appreciation of other cultures besides my Canadian one.
After college I became a Police Officer with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for almost 20 years and you can imagine what I have seen and been through in that profession. So I bring both my world cultural experiences along with seeing the people of this country at their very worst and at their very best and how the human spirit can always prevail.
Now, as I have matured in years and life experiences, my artwork is also finally coming around to meet my expectations. I have been boldly pursuing a full time career as an artist for the past 5 years. I now have been lead to share those experiences with the world.
I have stories to tell and express in my creative works. I create and paint in a wide variety of materials from graphite to molding paste, recycled materials to wood bases for my works.
I desire to find and foster relationships between the created works and the viewer. At times the ideas presented are vague and barely noticed, while at other times, they can be quite clear and bold. One might find a strong message within a piece, and at other times, it can be elusive. My goal is to start a conversation with you. Not that we might solve the world’s problems, but that we start a discussion. I do believe that each one of us has an opportunity in this life, to leave this place a bit better than when we arrived. I feel that I’m on the correct path; although not easy at times, I feel that I am on fire! If creativity were an electrical current, I would be a lightning bolt!
I will continue to strive to bring you closer to the unseen world that is all around us at any given moment; from my unique point of view. The storm is getting stronger!!!
